OVERVIEW

The main mission of the Atlanta Pride Committee is to provide lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender persons with cultural and educational programs and activities which enhance mental and physical health, provide social support, and foster an awareness of the past and present contributions of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender persons, through community activities and services, including an annual Pride event.

In the Spring of 2010, Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. announced its plan to incorporate arts and culture performances, exhibitions and installations along eight miles of bike and pedestrian trails scheduled to open to the public in June.

The Atlanta Pride Committee recognizes the value and the potential of the Art on the BeltLine project to revitalize communities along the corridor which includes Piedmont Park—the traditional home of our festival.

In an effort to represent the LGBT community as part of the Art on the BeltLine project, the Atlanta Pride Committee is issuing a request for proposals from visual and performing artists to create a work of art along a corridor of the BeltLine which runs adjacent to Piedmont Park.

PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS

Proposals should honor the connection of the Pride movement to the global struggle for Human and Civil Rights.

Proposals should illustrate appropriate research and planning for the implementations phase of installation. Contemporary and interdisciplinary approaches, innovative uses (or re-uses) of materials and new technologies are encouraged. Applicants are asked to consider ways in which some level of community involvement might be facilitated in the creation or ongoing interaction of the project.

Proposed materials should be modestly priced and durable with minimal maintenance in an outdoor setting. All works must be designed to be safely removed at the end of the designated period, or disintegrate safely into the environment. No works or materials deemed to be dangerous, toxic or hazardous to public safety will be accepted and all construction methods must be adequate and safe for public interaction.

Submissions must be able to withstand de-installation and a subsequent re-installation closer to the site of the Atlanta Pride Festival for the weekend of the Atlanta Pride Festival in October.

ELIGIBILITY

All artists are encouraged to apply—the call for submissions in not exclusive to LGBT artists.

BUDGET

The Atlanta Pride Committee (APC) will award $3,000 to one artist or arts group to produce their project. A detailed budget is requested as part of the submission requirements and should reflect the artist’s fee for conceptualization, materials, production, shipping, installation, maintenance and de-installation of the project.
